The New York City Transit Police Department was established in 1935 and it's main
responsibility, but not limited to was policing the New York City subway system. The
New York City subway system has over 660 miles of track in passenger service.

more than 840 miles and the system has 468 subway stations. The Transit Police
merged with the New York City Police Department in 1995.
